My Motherhood: Sarey Simkin

For the My Motherhood series, we ask different women the same series questions about mindfulness and motherhood to see what works for other women, but also to show how even though we may be different, we are all in this together.

Today on the blog I am thrilled to have Sarey share her motherhood journey with us. She is a wife, and a mama to 2 boys. She is also our mala maker. If you've ever received a mala from Mama Malas, Sarey is the one that puts all her love, care and intentions into each mala.

What does your perfect day look like?

In my head or real life? Because a typical day is perfectly imperfect, splashed with colourful messy emotions and heartfelt cuddles.
I suppose my perfect day would start with the warmth of the sunrise on my face after a full night sleep. Sipping coffee out of my favourite green mug on the deck of my parent’s cabin with my sisters while our littles slept in. Building sandcastles at the beach and fishing off the dock. Berry picking during the day and catching fire flies at night. A moonlit outdoor bath with my husband and a good bottle of wine.
The cabin is where my soul stands still. It’s where I am unable to hear the chaos… as beautiful as the chaos is sometimes.

Do you have and daily rituals you use to center yourself?

I wish I had some elaborate ritual to share. I breathe. I’m a breather. I listen to the sound of my breath and feel my beating heart in my chest. I focus on the sound. The feeling. The acknowledgment that I am alive and present in this life.

How do you make time for the different facets of your life?

Ugh… this struggle is real! Some days it’s feels like there is never enough time. I guess I just try to find a balance. Some days are full to the brim and it feels like I haven’t had a moment to even stop and take in the day. Other days I’m happy to stay in pjs all day, watching movies and cuddling my littles. It’s taken me a long time to recognize that I can’t do it all, all of the time… and that's ok.

Do you have any special family rituals?

We have a ‘Good Thing’ jar. It’s essentially a physical place where we can document the good things that have happened throughout the year. We fill out post it notes with ‘good things’, fold them up and throw them in the jar. It doesn’t need to be something major. Just something that made you feel good. Every New Year’s Eve, we dump out the jar and read them one by one to help us reflect back on the positive things that happened. The kids get really excited reading them and looking back. I usually cry. We often find secret good things from my family who were visiting from out of town.

What is the best advice you have ever given or received about motherhood?

That there is no right way to be a mother. I’ve learned to stop comparing myself to the way other women raise their babes. To not have a need to compete with, but rather be inspired by, other women. To know it’s not a fault to ask for help. To remember to slow down and not rob my boys the magic that is childhood.

What is your favourite part of motherhood?

Well, today my eldest told me I was the worst… so there’s that little gem.
I guess knowing that for my boys, the knowledge and possibilities are endless. Watching them discover who they are and what they have a passion for, brings me such a sense of joy.
Looking at them, REALLY looking at them. Their wild and free spirits. Their anger and joy. Their pain and pride. Really seeing them… it amazes me to think that I held these beings within me. My main goal is to teach them to be loving, kindhearted and empathetic humans. Everything else is just a bonus. My boys keep me humble everyday and remind me to be grateful for the good, the bad and everything in between.

"This mala is absolutely gorgeous and would make any mama feel powerful. The onyx is so strong and grounding, the sandalwood smells lovely, and I love that there is a little bit of rose quartz too! It’s nice to hold in your hand when you need to ground or calm down, and when you wear it, you feel like you can tackle anything! "
